Question:

483 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the offensive odour which emanates from the sewage treatment plant at Leixlip, County Kildare and that this nuisance has continued despite repeated upgrading of the facilities; if he can identify or advise on the cause or causes of the nuisance; if he will outline his proposals to remedy this problem and the timescale involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Question:

485 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to (1) the offensive odour which emanates from the sewage treatment plant at Osberstown, Naas, County Kildare and (2) the fact that this modern plant was expected to be trouble-free; if he will outline the means, either directly or through the aegis of Kildare County Council whereby this nuisance can be eliminated in the near future; if extra expenditure is required for these remedial works; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 483 and 485 together.

There are no proposals with my Department for odour control at either of these sewage treatment works. My Department has, however, requested Kildare County Council to submit a report on the matter and to indicate any remedial measures which are considered necessary.
