Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mid-Western Health Board Budget Shortfall.

Donal Carey

Question:

505 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for Health if he had discussions with he Mid-Western Health Board in relation to the £2.5 million shortfall in their budget; and if he has approved cutback proposals in this regard.

Officials of my Department have met the management of the Mid-Western Health Board on a regular basis throughout the year to monitor budgetary and service performance. I have been fully aware of the difficulties which the board are experiencing in coping with the service demands in their area. I have availed of all opportunities open to me, to assist the board in their endeavours to maintain and improve services.

I have repeatedly stressed the need for health agencies to live within approved funding levels. Operational decisions on measures needed to meet this requirement are entirely a matter for each board.
