Vol. 411 No. 1

Written Answers. - South Eastern Health Board Finances.

Phil Hogan

Question:

561 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the serious financial difficulty of the South Eastern Health Board where a considerable amount of finance is owed to creditors by the board; and if he will outline the results of discussions which his Department had with the chief executive officer of the South Eastern Health Board with a view to resolving these matters; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department are in regular contact with health agencies on financial, personnel and service matters.

In discussions, the South Eastern Health Board have indicated that they have been experiencing pressure on their cash resources. However, my Department have been able to meet the board's needs within the limits of their approved bank overdraft.

I must emphasise that the overall level of cash available is directly related to the total non-capital expenditure figure approved for health services.

I must stress, that while every assistance possible will continue to be extended to the board, it is ultimately a matter for each agency to maintain their spending within approved budgeting limits.
