Austin Currie

Question:

675 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the provision of a second level school for the Hartstown/Huntstown area of Dublin 15; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 674 and 675 together.

As the Deputy is aware, the availability of post-primary school places for pupils from the Castleknock/Hartstown/ Dunboyne areas has been under continuing review in my Department in the light of the most up-to-date data available on demographic trends, housing developments and primary school enrolments. Following recent meetings with parental representatives, I felt that, in the particular circumstances, independent consultants should be engaged to undertake a study to determine whether a new post-primary school is needed in the area and, if so, the required size and most appropriate location, having regard to relative population densities and the locations of existing schools.
The study is currently at an advanced stage. Following receipt and consideration of the consultants' report in my Department, a final decision will be made on the second level requirements for the areas in question.
