Vol. 411 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Kildare Commuter Rail Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

89 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has received a submission from Iarnród Éireann for the opening for commuter traffic of the railway stations at Newbridge, Sallins and Hazelhatch, Celbridge, County Kildare; if any consideration has been given to seeking the necessary funds for such a development from the EC; if his attention has further been drawn to the need to provide a commuter rail service to these towns in view of their fast expanding population; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received any proposals from Iarnród Éireann for the reopening of the Sallins and Hazelhatch (Celbridge) railway stations in County Kildare. The question of reopening these stations is, under the Transport Acts, a matter entirely for Iarnród Éireann. I have also been informed by Iarnród Éireann that the station in Newbridge is currently open to commuter traffic and that commuters are served both in the morning and in the evening by trains travelling to and from Cork and Athlone. Iarnród Éireann continue to monitor the position in relation to these services.

Question:

90 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has received any proposals from Iarnród Éireann for the reopening of the railway station at Kilcock, County Kildare; if there are any plans to seek funds from the EC for the provision of such a facility; if he will give favourable consideration to such plans; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received any proposals from Iarnród Éireann for the reopening of the railway station at Kilcock, County Kildare. There are no plans to seek EC funds for this purpose.
