Written Answers. - Garranbane (Waterford) School.

Austin Deasy

Question:

131 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education if she will grant approval for the appointment of a fourth teacher to Garranbane national school, Dungarvan, County Waterford, in view of (1) the increase in pupils to 140 and (2) the demographic study carried out locally which will ensure that these numbers will be maintained and further increased over the next four years.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

132 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint forthwith a fourth assistant for Garranbane national school, Dungarvan, County Waterford; if she will allow the staff room to be used as a temporary classroom and provide an extra classroom as speedily as possible; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 131 and 132 together.

The staffing of national schools for a particular year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with the agreement on staffing made between the Government and INTO. As this school had an enrolment of 108 pupils on 30 September 1990, the authorised staffing of the school for the 1991-92 school year is principal and three assistants.

My Department have received an application from the board of management of the school for the appointment of a fourth assistant and have informed by Department that enrolments have increased substantially. Because of this I have requested an inspector from my Department to furnish a report on the school. On receipt of this report my Department will be in touch with the school authorities regarding this matter.
