Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ground Contaminants.

Jim Higgins

Question:

63 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for the Environment if he has ensured that house and other designs are now taking into account the threat from radon.

I propose to make building regulations under the Building Control Act, 1990 in the near future. One of the requirements in the regulations will address the matter of contaminants on or in the ground to be covered by a building. The environmental research unit of my Department published a booklet entitled "Radon in Buildings" in January of this year. It gives practical guidance to building owners and those involved with the construction industry on measures to resist the ingress or accumulation of radon in a building. Copies are available in the Oireachtas Library.
