Vol. 411 No. 7

Written Answers. - Carcur (Wexford) Sports Centre.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

89 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education the reason the allocated £300,000 grant for a sports centre at Carcur, Wexford, has been withdrawn; if she will reconsider the decision; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Under the local sports centre capital programme approved by Government in 1988 and funded from the proceeds of the national lottery a grant of £300,000 was allocated to Wexford. Among the conditions of the grant was the submission of satisfactory proposals on the facilities to be provided, a local contribution of 30 per cent of the construction costs and appropriate management arrangements to ensure that the centre operated on a self-financing basis.

As no suitable proposals were received despite correspondence and meetings with the local interests, it is regrettable that the offer of the grant had to be withdrawn in March 1991.
