Written Answers. - Supplies for Defence Forces.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

35 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline, in relation to the purchasing of clothing and crockery for use in the Defence Forces (1) the yearly average expenditure on these items from 1988, (2) the amount expended to date this year on these items and (3) the firms which currently hold the contracts to supply same; and if he will make a statement on his Departments acceptance of contracts placed by the Government Supplies Agency.

As part of the reply regarding expenditure is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to circulate it in the Official Report.

Following competitive tendering contracts for the supply of clothing to the Defence Forces are placed on behalf of my Department by the Government Supplies Agency. The agency are required to ensure that tenders accepted for the supply of clothing meet the specifications laid down by my Department. Crockery is purchased directly from suppliers by my Department. It is not the practice to provide details in regard to firms which have been awarded contracts.
