Written Answers. - Defence Forces' Ranges.

Mervyn Taylor

Question:

66 Mr. Taylor asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the outcome of the discussions with the new owners of Red Barns Range, Dundalk on its future use; the number of medium machine gun ranges in the State which are used by the Defence Forces and their locations; the number and location of rifle ranges in the State which are used by the Defence Forces; and the number and location of mortar ranges used by the Defence Forces in the State.

My Department hold a letting of an area of land comprising 8½ acres approximately at Red Barns, Dundalk, County Louth until September 1992 for use as a rifle range by the Defence Forces. Discussions with the new owners of these lands on their use after September 1992 have taken place but no decisions have yet been made.

There are 26 ranges of various categories located throughout the country, and I will have details of these ranges included in the Official Report.
