Vol. 412 No. 6

Written Answers. - Furniture Material Safety Standard.

John Bruton

Question:

123 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the fact that some manufacturers of furniture are importing sub-standard foam for their furniture which is on sale here in Ireland and that these manufacturers can then label this furniture as fire resistant or fire retardant which is not the case; and if he proposes to take any action to have this serious situation rectified.

Responsibility for the enforcement of the Industrial Research and Standards (Fire Safety) (Domestic Furniture) Order, 1988, lies with the Director of Consumer Affairs, who is independent in the exercise of his functions. If the Deputy has any information about the importation of substandard foam or the use of such foam in furniture manufacturing, he should pass that information to the director.
