Vol. 413 No. 1

Written Answers. - Health Boards Appointment.

Michael Ferris

Question:

153 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Health the reason the same chief executive officer is appointed to the Midland and the Mid-Western health boards; the period of time this situation is envisaged to continue; and her views on whether the Midland Health Board have suffered through the lack of a full time chief executive officer.

A vacancy at chief executive officer level arose in the Mid-Western Health Board towards the end of 1987. The Local Appointments Commission were unable to recommend a suitable candidate for appointment. In the public interest, it was decided to appoint by Ministerial Order the chief executive officer of the Midland Health Board to the vacancy in the Mid-Western Health Board with effect from 1 December 1987. This appointment was subsequently extended for a further two years to 31 July 1992. This arrangement, which is working extremely well, has been made with the agreement of the chairmen of both health boards.
