Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Cope Foundation (Cork) Funding.

Máirín Quill

Question:

181 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the appalling plight of a sizeable number of Cork parents of handicapped children who are prevented from placing their children in proper education due to lack of funding for the institutions of the Cope Foundation; and if he will outline his proposals to tackle this problem.

I take it the Deputy is referring to the provision of educational facilities for severely mentally handicapped children in the Cork area.

The question of augmenting the teaching service for the severely mentally handicapped currently under the auspices of Cope Foundation is being actively considered by my Department at present.

I will advise the Deputy of the outcome as soon as possible.
