Vol. 413 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Directive to State Board Members.

Austin Deasy

Question:

2 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach if chairpersons or ordinary members of State boards under his control are given a directive not to be involved in political activities publicly; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Chairpersons and ordinary members are appointed to State boards because of their capacity for and commitment to the work of the board. The integrity and discretion of board members are relied on under successive Governments to avoid any activity which might adversely reflect on their position as a board member. No more than my predecessors, I do not envisage a specific directive on the matter of political activity.

Civil servants, however, appointed to State boards remain subject to the terms of their employment which exclude political activity.
