Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Kildare Bogland Purchase Application.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

71 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance if he will sell the freehold of boglands (details supplied) to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare who has leased the property since 1960; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that similar sales have been agreed in respect of other properties in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The land in question forms part of the property which was transferred to the Commissioners of Public Works under the Canals Act, 1986. This Act placed on the commissioners the statutory duty to develop the canals including associated properties for public amenity purposes.

A verbal request to purchase a plot of bogland was received from the person involved in County Kildare. He was asked in November last year for written information on the particular plot of bogland in which the freehold interest was sought but no further communication was received. The commissioners will now write to the applicant and on receipt of the necessary information the question of a sale will be considered.
