Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Manpower.

Ivor Callely

Question:

135 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the numerical strength of the Garda Síochána assigned to the Dublin Metropolitan area for the years (1) 1980, (2) 1985 and (3) 1990; his views on whether there are sufficient gardaí to police the Dublin Metropolitan area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The numbers of members of the Garda Síochána assigned to the Dublin Metropolitan Area on 31 December in each of the years 1980, 1985 and 1990 were 3,165, 4,019 and 3,852 respectively. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the equivalent strength on 31 October 1991 was 3,977 and that the question of allocating additional manpower to the area will be considered when the next group of newly attested gardaí become available for assignment.
