Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Education Grant Application.

Michael Noonan

Question:

138 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if a higher education grant or any other grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in Limerick who has been deemed ineligible for such a grant as she did not have two honours in her Leaving Certificate.

Inquiries have been made from the relevant local authorities and I regret to say that the person in question does not, under the current regulations, qualify for a higher education grant or for a vocational education committee scholarship.

However, as recently agreed in the Programme for Government, the amendment of the higher education grants scheme in a number of areas is being considered. The proposed amendments include regarding a mature student who secures a place in an approved course in a recognised third-level institution as satisfying the academic requirements for the award of a grant under the scheme. When a decision has been arrived at in relation to these proposals details of the scheme will be available from the local authorities.
