Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Westmeath Level Crossing.

Paul McGrath

Question:

145 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he has satisfied himself in relation to the safety of road users at level crossing No. 99 at Torrydonnellan, County Westmeath on the Dublin-Athlone railway line where (1) the track has been raised by approximately three feet, (2) the remade approach roads are dangerous because of a loose gravel surface, (3) access gates are 8' 9" wide and are unsuitable for access by farm machinery, (4) there are approximately 24 trains using the line daily and (5) five families must cross here regularly to gain access to their houses; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Chairman of CIE has informed me that the track at Torrydonnellan accommodation crossing on the Dublin-Athlone railway was raised approximately 8" during track renewal work in 1990.

I understand that following the track renewal the road approaches to the crosssing were improved by Westmeath County Council to compensate for the track lift. The width of the crossing surface was also increased to meet the demands of road users. I am advised that when the track structure settles early in the New Year it is proposed to install a precast concrete surface, which is on order at present.

Manned attendance is not provided at the level crossing and users have responsibility for opening and closing the gates and for the safe use of the crossing.
