Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Level Crossing Barriers.

Paul McGrath

Question:

144 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications the number of automatic level crossing barriers installed, per county, in each of the last three years; and his views on whether these automatic barriers are much safer for road users than the outdated unmanned crossings.

I have been informed by the Chairman of CIE that automatic half barriers were installed at Newberry East level crossing, County Cork in 1989 and at Oranmore level crossing, County Galway in 1991. These crossings were previously gated level crossings operated by a crossing keeper.

In addition to these automatic barriers, semi-automatic barriers were installed at Skehacraeggaun and at Dock Road, County Limerick. These crossings are both situated on the Limerick Cement factory siding.

I am satisfied that automatic level crossings operating in conjunction with associated warning lights, road traffic signs and markings are safer for road users than older gated crossings.
