Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Household Appliance Recycling Scheme.

Peter Barry

Question:

50 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider introducing rules to require manufacturers and retailers to take back, free of charge, used household appliances that they originally sold; his views on whether such a scheme would be a useful contribution to protecting and enhancing the environment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am commissioning a general study on strategies for recycling in Ireland; the brief for this includes consideration of take-back systems for retailers and producers. Particularly in prospect of the comprehensive new legislation on waste being prepared in my Department, I will be evaluating all of the options referred to the consultants for consideration when their study is completed.
