Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dromod (County Leitrim) Bridge.

John Ellis

Question:

106 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Environment the up-to-date position in relation to the provision of a new bridge at Dromod in County Leitrim, which has been the subject of ongoing negotiations between Leitrim County Council, Iarnród Éireann and his Department.

The bridge in question is owned and maintained by Iarnród Éireann. In July 1991, following emergency repairs carried out by Iarnród Éireann and pending permanent strengthening works, Leitrim County Council imposed a weight restriction prohibiting use of the bridge by vehicles with an overall weight exceeding 1.5 tonnes.

Agreement has recently been reached between the council and Iarnród Éireann that the solution to the structural problem is to provide a concrete saddle over the arch and Iarnród Éireann's design staff are preparing the design and drawings for this work. The question of the funding will be the subject of further discussions between the council and Iarnród Éireann.
