Vol. 413 No. 6

Written Answers. - Regional Authorities.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

111 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to seek the views of interested parties as part of the process of establishing the regional authorities as promised in the review of the Programme for Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government's proposals for local government reform, including the establishment of regional authorities, were formulated in the light of a review process which involved wide ranging consultation, including consideration by the Advisory Expert Committee on Local Government Reform of nearly 200 submissions. Specific consultation on the regional aspect has been initiated with all Government Departments, in so far as their activities and those of bodies under their aegis are concerned. I will consider what further consultation may need to be undertaken as the preparatory work for the establishment of regional authorities proceeds.
