Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - Services for HIV/AIDS Victims.

Peter Barry

Question:

59 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the continued rapid growth in reported cases of persons infected with the HIV virus and the many more cases which are unidentified she will consider establishing a special earmarked budget for developing services to deal with this growing problem.

It is Government policy that persons with HIV/AIDS should receive the treatment and care appropriate to their needs in both community and institutional settings. Because of the trends of the disease in Ireland the strategy being implemented by the Government to deal with the AIDS/HIV problem is a co-ordinated one which recognises the increased demands which will be placed on our health services in both the community and hospital settings in the short to medium term. I am at present considering the options for funding these increased demands. I have arranged for a copy of the Governments Strategy to be made available to each Deputy.
