Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mental Illness Legislation.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

71 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health her views on whether there is a need to reform the Mental Illness Act, 1945; and the progress which has been made within her Department in framing new proposals.

My Department are at present undertaking a detailed review of legislation on mental health. Following this review, it is my intention to issue a discussion document in which there will be wide ranging consultations with interested parties. Following this consultation, I would hope to put forward proposals to Government for new mental health legislation which will protect the interests of patients and facilitate the development of community psychiatric services as recommended in the report, Planning for the Future, published in 1984.
