Emmet Stagg

Question:

257 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education when he proposes to sanction and fund the required and agreed extension to Allen national school in County Kildare.

I propose taking Questions Nos. 245,246 and 257 together.

I would refer the Deputies to my predecessor's reply on 30 November 1989 to Question No. 93, regarding the provision of a new national school at Allen, Kilmeague, Naas, County Kildare. My Department have since reviewed the matter and the provision of a new block of four permanent classrooms has been approved for the site which has been made available by the school authorities. This new block will serve as a supplement to the three relatively new prefabricated classrooms and an older prefab will no longer be required. This proposal has been the subject of correspondence from the school authorities.

The preparation of a sketch plan for the project is in hands and this will be completed at the earliest possible date when it will be sent to the school authorities to enable them to apply for local authority planning permission. Allowing for the time needed to (1) secure planning permission, (2) prepare tender documents and (3) invite and examine tenders it is unlikely that any grant expenditure would be incurred on this case in 1992.

The local contribution is a matter for the school authorities and my Department will discuss this with them when tenders have been received and examined.
