Vol. 414 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Commemorative Postage Stamp.

Dick Spring

Question:

9 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if the Government has any proposals to approve the issue of a postage stamp to commemorate the foundation of the United Irishmen.

I am glad to be able to inform the Deputy that An Post issued a stamp on 2 July last to commemorate the Bicentenary of the United Irishmen.

I am delighted the Minister reminded the House that the stamp was issued last July. Indeed the United Irish Society — as they were called — were founded in October of that year, if memory serves me right. One would wish to commemorate the fact that it was in Cavehill in Belfast that this historic event occurred.

I wish all the questions were as simple.
