Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - Catechetics Qualification.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

235 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education if his Department will recognise the two year diploma in catechetics awarded by University College, Cork as an acceptable qualification for the purposes of appointment to a permanent wholetime teaching post as a religious teacher in a vocational school as it is acceptable for a temporary or part-time post at present; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The accepted basic qualification for appointment on a permanent, wholetime teacher of catechetics in a vocational school is a diploma or degree obtained following a three-year full-time course of study.

The diploma referred to by the Deputy is awarded after a two-year, part-time course and, as such, is not an acceptable qualification for the purpose in question.
