Vol. 414 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Wexford Primary School Extension.

Ivan Yates

Question:

234 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the current overcrowding situation in a primary school (details supplied) in County Wexford; if he will grant an extension to the existing classrooms, so that children would no longer have to use a PE hall for classroom facilities and in view of the growing population in the area; and when approval will be given for an eighth classroom.

I am aware of the situation in relation to the primary school in County Wexford referred to by the Deputy. This school has eight teachers who are accommodated in a building which was provided in 1983 and has accommodation in seven classrooms, a general purposes room and ancillary facilities. Following the appointment of the eighth teacher, my Department approved the provision of a pre-fabricated classroom but the school authorities requested a permanent classroom instead. Officials from my Department have arranged a meeting with the school authorities which will take place today to discuss the matter.
