Edward Nealon

Question:

244 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education the percentage of primary schools in County Leitrim offering a foreign language to its pupils; and if he has any plans to encourage or facilitate other primary schools to develop foreign language teaching.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 243 and 244 together.

As the prescribed curriculum for national schools does not contain provision for a language other than Irish and English, statistics as requested by the Deputy in relation to counties Leitrim and Sligo are not available to my Department.

I outlined the position in relation to the question of a European language on the curriculum of the primary school in my reply of 3 December 1991 to Questions Nos. 13, 75, 79 and 279.
