Vol. 414 No. 10

Written Answers. - Redundancy Statistics.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

17 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline (1) the number of persons made redundant to date in 1991 and (2) the comparable number for the same periods in each of the years (1) 1986, (2) 1987, (3) 1988, (4) 1989 and (5) 1990.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

24 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Labour the number of redundancies notified to his Department to date in 1991.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 17 and 24 together.

The information sought by the Deputies is set out in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Redundancies Notified by Employers January-November 1986-1991.

Year

No. of Notified Redundancies

1986

20,947

1987

22,194

1988

21,500

1989

12,618

1990

12,379

1991

15,504

It should be noted that the available statistics relate only to redundancies which are notified to the Department and not to actual redundancies. The statistics in the tabular statement do not, therefore, include certain categories of employees which are outside the Redundancy Payments Acts, for example, employees with less than two years eligible service with an employer, employees who are under 16 years of age or employees who have reached the qualifying age for old age pension.
