Vol. 415 No. 3

Written Answers. - Security Companies Registration.

Peter Barry

Question:

52 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if he has any proposals to register security companies.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 153 of 12 February 1991 in which I informed the House that I had no plans to introduce a system of compulsory registration of security firms.

I might mention, however, that, as I indicated in my reply to Question No. 5 on 2 May 1991, the Garda authorities and my Department are at present finalising details of a new policy aimed at reducing the incidence of false alarm calls to the Garda. The alarms in question are those which are relayed to the Garda either directly through the 999 system, etc. or else through monitoring centres provided by security firms and the problem of false alarms from such devices has reached worrying proportions. This new policy will, of course, have implications for the security industry, but will not involve compulsory registration of security companies.
