My direct responsibility for recruitment relates to the Civil Service only. Open competitions for the Civil Service are held by the Civil Service Commission and are advertised by them in the national daily newspapers. Of course these newspapers are available not only in Ireland but also in some parts of the UK, the USA and elsewhere. Certain professional and technical vacancies are also advertised in periodicals which circulate abroad. The commission do not advertise in newspapers published abroad as a general practice and they consider that such a practice would have major cost and administrative implications. However they receive many applications from emigrants in response to their advertisements for vacancies in the national newspapers as illustrated in the following table which shows the number of candidates who applied to sit in centres outside the State in recent competitions for administrative officer-third secretary.
