Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Motorways Act.

Donal Carey

Question:

65 Mr. Carey asked the Minister for the Environment if he has examined the need for motorways in Ireland; and whether he has any plans to amend the Motorways Act, 1974.

During 1987-88, my Department carried out a detailed review of long term road development needs over a 20-year period. Among the conclusions were that there would be a long term need to upgrade 580 kilometers of national primary road to dual carriageway or motorway standard. The medium term strategy outlined in the operational programme on peripherality gives priority to the provision of motorways from Dublin to the Border (N1), Naas to Portlaoise (N7) and Dublin to Kinnegad (N4).

The provisions of the Local Government (Roads and Motorways) Act, 1974, are proposed for repeal and re-enactment in an amended form in Part IV of the Roads Bill, 1991.
