Vol. 415 No. 4

Written Answers. - Southern Cross Route.

Nuala Fennell

Question:

161 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the proposed commencement date for the building of the Southern Cross route; if there will be another public inquiry held in this regard; and the year in which the route will commence to function.

The public inquiry into Dublin County Council's Southern Cross Route motorway scheme and eight associated compulsory purchase orders concluded on 11 October 1991. Until I have received and considered the report of the inspector who conducted the inquiry, I will not be in a position to make a decision in the matter. The question of a further public inquiry does not arise.

The Southern Cross Route has been included in the Operational Programme on Peripherality which envisages construction during the period 1992-1995. In view of my quasi-judicial function in relation to the motorway scheme, it would not be appropriate for me to comment further at this stage on the likely timing of the project.
