The registration of medical practitioners is a matter for the Medical Council. The council have a total of 9,019 persons registered as medical practitioners and of these the Irish College of General Practitioners estimate that 2,100 are general practitioners.

There are currently 1,597 general practitioners contracted to provide services for eligible patients in the general medical services scheme.
