Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - Human Rights Violations in Tibet.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

148 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been drawn to the allegations of widespread violations of human rights and torture by the Chinese authorities in Tibet; and if he will outline the action that has been taken to voice this country's outrage at these reprehensible practices.

Ireland and the other member states of the Community have expressed their deep concern about reports of human rights abuses in China, including Tibet, in demarches to the Chinese Authorities in Beijing and in international fora such as the UN General Assembly. We shall continue to avail of our dialogue with China to bring home to the Chinese authorities the importance of respect for human rights, in accordance with their international obligations.
