Vol. 415 No. 7

Written Answers. - Abbeyleix (Laois) School Transport.

Charles Flanagan

Question:

61 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the problem of school transport for pupils attending the South School, Abbeyleix, County Laois from the Coolt/Corbally area in so far as a recent rerouting of the service has given rise to a dangerous situation where children (details supplied) have to walk a considerable distance on the major Dublin/Cork national primary route; if, having regard to the dangers involved, consideration will be given towards having the bus stop at Coolt as well as at Corbally Cross which would cause no inconvenience to the operators of the service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am advised by Bus Éireann that there has been no recent rerouting of the service which would affect the families mentioned.

Home pick-ups are not a feature of the primary school transport scheme and the children in question are considered to have a reasonable standard of service. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure the safety of children between home and pick-up point.
