The energy industry is already subject to a wide range of environmental legislation including water and air pollution legislation. The Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 1990, provides that activities such as the production of electricity in combustion plant and large boilers or furnaces will be subject to a new system of integrated licensing to be operated by the proposed Environmental Protection Agency. The agency will also be empowered by section 74 of the Bill to prepare and publish codes of practice for the purposes of environmental protection. In addition, the Bill provides for other measures for the promotion of environmentally sound practices, including environmental auditing, eco labelling and environmental quality objectives.
