Vol. 415 No. 9

Written Answers. - National School Infant Departments.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

165 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Education if he has any plans to improve the resources and staffing ratios available in infant departments in national schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans to allocate additional resources specifically to departments in infant national schools. As the Deputy will be aware, provision was made in the 1992 budget for the retention of 300 posts in national schools where teacher numbers would otherwise decline due to following enrolments. This will reduce the pupil teacher ratio from 25.8:1 in the 1991-92 school year to 25.2:1 in the 1992-93 school year.
