Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin-Sligo Railway Line.

Ivan Yates

Question:

131 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if she will outline, (a) the cost of updating the Dublin-Sligo railway line, (b) the period over which it is proposed to carry out such phased expenditure to bring the line up to an acceptable standard; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Iarnród Éireann has advised me that the company will spend £2 million this year on upgrading up to seven miles of track on the Dublin-Sligo line. For the longer term, the investment requirements of the overall network including the Dublin-Sligo line together with possible funding alternatives, including EC funds, will be among the issues to be addressed in the context of the detailed assessment of the strategic options for the future of the railway which is being carried out at present by CIE in conjunction with my Department and the Department of Finance.
