Vol. 416 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cattle Export Regulations.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

182 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether an inspector of his Department has ever travelled on a cattle boat to Tripoli; and if so, if he has (a) inspected the conditions for the slaughter of the cattle and (b) satisfied himself that the animals were treated at all times in accordance with Irish law.

Veterinary inspectors of my Department have travelled periodically with shipments of live cattle to various destinations, including, Libyan ports, to safeguard the animals' welfare while in transit and at the point of unloading. All shipments of live cattle are inspected at the point of departure. The conditions and treatment of animals in non EC countries are the responsibility of the authorities of those countries.
