33 Mrs. Barnes asked the Minister for the Marine if he will give a progress report on the setting up and work of the Marine Institute with special regard to staffing, research projects and funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
The Marine Institute legislation was enacted in 1991. This legislation has, however, yet to be brought into effect and the institute has not been established.
I am reviewing as a matter of urgency all matters relating to the establishment of the institute having regard to the budgets available, the position of other research agencies assisted from the Department of the Marine Vote and the implementation of the STRIDE programme.
I will announce my proposals in relation to the establishment of the institute as soon as this review is complete.
