Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Treatment of Mentally III Offenders.

Bernard Allen

Question:

294 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the recent Irish hospital consultants association report that facilities for treating mentally ill offenders in the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum are appalling, and consist of cells without proper toilet or washing facilities.

The provision of psychiatric facilities at the Central Mental Hospital, Dundrum is the responsibility of the Eastern Health Board.

I am aware that the commissioning of a new purpose built 31 bed unit at the Central Mental Hospital is at an advanced stage. This will represent a marked improvement in facilities for the treatment and care of patients.

Other facilities at the hospital are being constantly upgraded as resources become available.
