Vol. 416 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Status.

Dick Spring

Question:

120 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the steps he intends to take to ensure that persons on FÁS-social employment schemes have their tax status clarified immediately so as to minimise the hardship caused to them by having to pay emergency tax.

Persons on social employment schemes will not be taxed on the emergency basis if they obtain a tax free allowance certificate from their inspector of taxes. I am told by the Revenue Commissioners that, once an application is made to them, a certificate will issue within two to three days.

The Revenue Commissioners have undertaken to discuss with the Department of Labour ways of ensuring that participants in social employment schemes understand how to go about applying for a tax free allowance certificate.
