Vol. 416 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease.

Michael Creed

Question:

57 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has satisfied himself that no risk of infection or contamination to the national herd persists in view of the recent slaughter of cattle at a quarantine location on Spike Island as a result of their failure to pass a test for foot and mouth disease.

There is no risk of infection or contamination to the national herd resulting from the slaughter of animals referred to in the Deputy's question. The animals were not infected with foot and mouth disease. A positive reaction to routine tests indicated that the animals might at an earlier stage have been vaccinated against foot and mouth disease. Import of such vaccinated animals into Ireland is not permitted.
