Vol. 416 No. 7

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Commission.

Michael Noonan

Question:

81 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the request of the Garda Representative Association for a commission of inquiry into the role of the Garda Síochána; if he intends establishing such a commission; and if not, if he will outline the reasons for not establishing one.

I am aware that the Garda Representative Association proposed the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the role of the Garda Síochána to my predecessors. Their response was that they did not consider that there was any confusion as to the role of the Garda Síochána and that, accordingly, such a commission would not be warranted. I, too, am inclined to that view but I am prepared to listen to and consider any concerns the association may wish to raise with me.
