Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Appointment of Examination Supervisors.

William Cotter

Question:

219 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if he will outline his Department's policy with regard to appointments of supervisors for the certificate examinations at post-primary level for the 1992 examinations; whether his Department is proposing to change the format of previous years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The position in relation to the appointment of superintendents is that applicants, who have acted satisfactorily as superintendents at previous years' examinations, and who are under the age of 65 years, will be reappointed in 1992, provided their applications were submitted to my Department by the closing date of 20 December 1991.

In the case of new applicants in 1992 those born before a date yet to be decided — this date is dependent on the overall number of suitable applicants vis-à-vis the number of centres — will be appointed to fill the remaining vacancies. The names of the remaining applicants are placed on a reserve panel in descending order of age. Where an emergency occurs immediately prior to, or during the examinations appointments are made from the reserve panel. In such cases selection is by reference to location rather than age.

While the vast majority of superintendents are serving teachers, a small number of unemployed teachers are also appointed.

There are no plans at present to change this format for the appointment of superintendents.
