Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Psychiatric Hospital Admissions.

Ivor Callely

Question:

245 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the total number of admissions to psychiatric hospitals in the Dublin area for 1991; the number of acute admissions; the number of voluntary admissions; the number of compulsory admissions; and if he will provide comparative figures for 1985 and 1990.

The information requested by the Deputy is compiled by the Health Research Board on a contract basis for my Department.

The latest available information is in respect of the year 1988. In the absence of the availability of information for the years 1990 and 1991 I propose to provide comparative figures for 1985 and 1988.
The following information relates to the functional area of the Eastern Health Board which covers the city and county of Dublin and the counties of Kildare and Wicklow and includes admissions to both public and private psychiatric hospitals.

1985

1988

Number of Acute Admissions

9,099

10,144

Number of Voluntary Admissions

7,980

8,916

Number of Involuntary Admissions

1,119

1,228

I am concerned at the delay in the compilation of these statistics and I am taking the matter up with the Health Research Board.
