Vol. 417 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mental Health Legislation.

Ivor Callely

Question:

255 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if he has given any consideration to introducing legislation or amending the Mental Treatment Act, 1945 and the Mental Treatment Regulations, 1961, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department are currently reviewing all aspects of mental health legalisation including the provisions of the Mental Treatment Act, 1945 and the Mental Treatment Regulations, 1961.

Following this review, I would hope to bring forward proposals for new mental health legislation which will protect the interests of patients and facilitate the development of community based psychiatric services as recommended in the report, Planning for the Future, which was published in 1984.
