Vol. 417 No. 6

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Safety Devices.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

136 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider introducing regulations to make it compulsory for motor vehicles to have Safety Air Bags as standard in view of the potential for a reduction in injuries and fatalities that these devices will achieve; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Bernard Allen

Question:

140 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment if he proposes to have discussions with representatives of the car manufacturers in this country regarding fitted anti-theft devices in view of the rash of car thefts in the country in recent times.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 136 and 140 together.

I understand that the development of relevant proposals in these matters is being considered at EC and UN/ECE level, in consultation with motor vehicle manufacturers. Ireland alone cannot effectively exercise a major influence on car design but will support all practical proposals which would contribute to greater safety.
